Some phones and other personal or home devices rely on 3G technology to connect to the mobile network.
When 3G is switched off from August 2026, devices that only support 3G will no longer be able to connect to any services, including calls, texts, and data.
This page will help you identify whether your device is affected and what to do next. If you need help or would like someone to talk you through it, our team can check your device in-store, over the phone, or during a home visit.
Your phone may be affected if:
- It is an older handset that does not support 4G
- You only ever see '3G' at the top of your screen
- Your phone settings do not show 4G or LTE as an option
If your phone supports 4G, it will continue to connect to the network once 3G is switched off.
Devices beyond mobile phones
Some non-phone devices also use the mobile network. These may include:
- Personal alarms and medical alert devices
- Security systems and smart alarms
- Vehicle trackers and telematics equipment
- Mobile broadband dongles and portable WiFi devices
- Business equipment such as payment terminals, sensors or monitoring systems
If you're unsure whether your device uses 3G, check the manufacturer’s website or user manual, or get in touch and we can help you identify it.
How to check if your phone supports 4G
1. Find your phone's model number
- Phones with a removable battery often have the model number on a sticker under the battery.
- You can also use your IMEI number: dial *#06# to get your IMEI, then enter it at IMEI.info to find your phone's model.
2. Look up your phone model online
- Go to GSM Arena and search for your phone's make and model number.
- Expand the Network section – if there's a 4G Bands section, your phone works with 4G.
What happens next
- If your device supports 4G or 5G – no further action is needed
- If your device is 4G capable but set to 3G – follow the guidance to update your settings
- If your device only supports 3G – we will help you explore suitable alternatives or replacement devices
