Before you start
- Setup and installation takes about 10 minutes and is easy to do yourself, without the need to call any engineers.
- Ensure that your broadband line is activated; check the date stated in the confirmation letter that you received when you signed up.
- You should have received everything you need to set up your broadband, including instructions. If you haven't received these, please contact us on 0808 10 15 247.
- If you have lost your instructions you can find out how to set everything up below.
- You can set up your router wherever you have a phone line socket; however it is best to put the router somewhere near to the main areas where you will use the internet if you are using it wirelessly to ensure the best connection.
ADSL filters explained
If you have purchased a router from Sure, your box will contain two ADSL micro filters. These filters must be plugged into your phone sockets at the wall to separate your voice (phone) and data (internet) signals which both enter your house though the same phone line. ADSL filters must be used with all equipment connected to your telephone line; routers, fax, sky boxes and answering machines and should be installed at each phone socket in your house.
If you don't have enough microfilters, you will need to buy more - either from our shops or some other electrical outlets.
How to install ADSL microfilters
Simply plug it into your phone socket as shown below and then connect your phone or router to the correct port.
Each filter has two ports - one for phone equipment (home phones, sky boxes, fax and answering machines) and one for computers (ADSL routers).
To achieve the best speeds, avoid using any extension cables over 10 ft long and ensure that if you use an extension lead, that the filter is installed at the end of the lead closest to the router.
If you are using a socket doubler or do not need an extension lead, you should connect the filter directly to the wall phone socket. Please note that you do not have to have something plugged in to both points for the filter to work; you can just have a phone or only a router.
How to connect your equipment
Most broadband routers support two ways of connecting your computer
- by wireless via the router's aerial or
- by Ethernet with an Ethernet cable.
If you need a longer Ethernet cable, you can buy them from most good computer shops. We recommend however that you try and use the shortest length of cable possible to maximise speeds.
If you are connecting to a laptop or PC and it has wireless capability, you only need to use the grey DSL cable connected as shown below. To check if your laptop or PC has wireless capability, see your computer's specifications or you can make it wireless by buying a wireless adapter from most computer shops.
Connecting your equipment if you have wireless capabilities
If your laptop or desktop PC does not have wireless capability, you can connect it directly to the router using the yellow Ethernet cable, as shown below.

Once you have plugged your router in as shown, the power light on the top of your router will initially be red and the broadband light will flash green.
Wait until the light has stopped flashing before proceeding to connect to your broadband internet - this can take around 2 minutes.
How to connect to the internet
Once your equipment is set up as above, your broadband is ready. If your router was supplied by Sure it will be automatically configured to enable you to connect to the internet with no additional set up.
Whether you have connected wirelessly or via the Ethernet cable, your broadband will now enable you to access the internet. If you are connected via Ethernet simply open a web browser and type in the address of the web page you require. If you are connected wirelessly click:
Start > Network or connect to > View available networks
You will see your new connection as an unsecured network and it is likely to be called the name of your router followed by the start of your serial number e.g. TNCAPB40115. You can find the serial number of your router on the base and it will look similar to the number below:
Simply double click on this connection and select connect. You should then be connected to your wireless broadband and you can open a browser and begin to surf the internet.
Secure your connection with a password
We recommend that you secure your network with a password to protect your internet from other people using it and to increase your security. The setup below relates to the optional Technicolor TG582n router supplied by Sure when you sign up to Sure broadband. If you are using any other equipment, please refer to your product’s manual or website.
To protect your wireless connection you need to:
- Connect to your unsecured internet connection with an Ethernet cable or wirelessly. You can only secure your network if you are connected to it.
- When connected, open your web browser (e.g. Internet explorer, Chrome or Firefox) and type 192.168.1.254 in the address bar and press enter.
- It may ask for a username and password to connect to the router, as default username is Administrator and the password is the Serial number (S/N) on the bottom of the router that will look like this:
- Scroll down to Home Network on the left hand side.
Next, click on Wireless, then Configure on the top right hand corner. This will bring you to the wireless settings page. Towards the bottom there will be a section called security where you can activate wireless protection and choose a wireless password.
Router settings for non-Sure supplied equipment
If you are using your own equipment rather than one supplied by Sure, you will need to use the router settings below to set up your broadband. Please refer to your individual router manual for the connection process:
ATM Settings: VPI 0 VCI 38
Encapsulation: PPPOA / VC / VCMux
Primary DNS: 220.127.116.11
Secondary DNS: 18.104.22.168
Depending on the model of router you have, you may also need the following advanced settings.

Setting up your broadband after moving house
If you move house with your Sure router, please contact us to update your address details. When connected as shown above, your router should have saved all of your settings and work as normal when you turn it on. For routers not supplied by Sure, please visit the manufacturer's website.
